Dog Toy I Will Never Afford

I can confidently say I will most likely NEVER be able to afford this dog toy.  Ever.  Basically, I’ll let the video do most of the talking, but what it is, is a “Virtual Soccer Game” that your pet can play and not cause any damage whatsoever.

In the video, you’ll see a little Jack Russell Terrier playing soccer on a miniature soccer field, pushing around a little soccer ball without ever touching or chewing anything! Impressive, no?  Could this be the future of dog toys?  Perhaps, but then again, the inability for the dog to chew up, taste, smell or well, destroy, the toy might take away a little bit of the fun.

Check out the video, check out the technology that makes it possible, and then check out your wallet and weep openly as you realize your pets will most likely have to settle for yet another $8 chew toy.  Ahh, life.

Unique New Dog Clothes from Junjing Industrial

I’ll be the very first to admit, when I hear the name Junjing Industrial, the very last thing I’d imagine a company named that making would be cute little dog clothes, leashes and collars.  To me, it sounds like they’d be building the world’s tallest buildings or coming up with a creative new way to use concrete.  Nevertheless, amazingly unique dog clothing, pet supplies and accessories it is, and for that, I’m actually pretty thankful.

They have a great deal of different products, seriously ranging from dog food storage to pet grooming to pet diapers to clothing.  The clothing is what I’d like to talk about as some of it is not only adorable, but pretty darn original too!  Check out these down type jackets with RSS logos on the back.  I don’t know about you, but if i owned a small dog, it’d be wrapped up in one of those this winter!

I also love the little stripe shirts and the little hooded sweatshirts.  Something about a little lap dog wearing a hooded sweatshirt just gets me every time.  Whatever your’e looking for in the world of unique pet gifts, this would be a place to check it out.  I spent 20 minutes there and found almost 100 things I’d want to buy!

Dog Crate or Expensive Living Room Furniture?

If you’re a dog owner, I can almost personally guarantee that at some point in time you’ve longed for a type of dog crate, dog furniture or dog bedding that would just blend in beautifully to your home decor.  The fact of the matter is, the majority of dog crates are the large plastic and metal contraptions that take up far too much room while looking extremely unsightly…better suited for the garage than the living room.

Folks those days might just be over.  I just found a pretty amazing piece of “dog-iture” that could put an end to your search for a dog crate that can beautifully blend in with the rest of your home!  The Orvis Solid Wood Crate Furniture does just that.  It provides a safe, comfortable dog crate for your puppy while looking and serving as an end table for your living room.  They designed it in three different sizes to fit just about every possible breed of dog and it really does fit right in with whatever home decor you might have chosen.

The bad news, if there is any, is that with this level of form and function, unfortunately comes a price.  Look to spend anywhere from $200 to $500 for the small to the extra-large variety.  Just keep in mind, you’re not just buying a dog crate, those are much cheaper, you’re also buying some gorgeous furniture for your living room.  Talk about killing two birds with one stone, or rather, filling two needs with one piece of furniture!

Celebrity Chefs Making Gourmet Pet Food!

The days of simply scooping a measured amount of dry dog food into your dog’s silver bowl are officially over.  The simple fact of the matter is, today, more than ever, there are more choices of amazing pet food than ever before.  Today, there are more gourmet choices of pet food than ever before and it seems to be that the trend is for some pretty famous celebrity chef’s are jumping on the bandwagon.

That’s right, everyone from Rachael Ray to Norman Levitz to Rocco DeSpirito are jumping head-first into the pet-food industry and they’re hoping to make a sizable splash.  Rachael Ray’s new line, called “Rachael Ray Nutrish” is apparently made with all-natural ingredients and zero fillers.  Impressive no?  “Nutrish” is apparently available all around the entire country, and is pretty competitively prices.  Also joining Ray in the pet-food game is Norman Levitz, a famous chef and educator at Johnson & Wales culinary institute.  His new line, named “Wagatha’s - Extraordinary Biscuits for Dogs,” is 100% organic and friends, that is no easy task!

Heck, even “Eight is Enough” actor Dick van Patten has gotten into the game with his “Chinese Takeaway for Dogs” that unfortunately was entirely recalled due to botulism.  The bottom line is, celebrity chef’s everywhere are getting into the game and offering up what seems to be a very exciting, and very great new trend:  All Natural dog food, dog treats and 100% organic food!  I could not be happier to see this trend!  Got a favorite Dog food?  Sound off, we’d love to know what you feed your furry friends!

Pampered Spoiled Pooches Helping the Economy

Wow, talk about a cool surprise this fine Wednesday morning.  I wake up and find some awesome news from CNN of all places that all of us dog and pet lovers that just can’t help pampering our puppies are actually doing a great service to the economy as a whole!  That’s right folks, our pampered, spoiled dogs are actually helping things along in this struggling, downward spirling economy of ours!

Turns out, all the dog clothes, dog gifts, dog accessories and silly gadgets we buy for our pups are helping more than just their egos.  According to CNN, “The American Pet Products Association estimates Americans will spend $43.4 billion this year on their pets — a figure that includes everything from treats to training — despite the dramatic slowdown in discretionary spending. That’s 26 percent higher than what U.S. consumers spent in 2004…”

Whereas many other industries in the country are taking large, brutal hits to their sales and profits, for some reason the dog industry has not been struggling at all; in fact, quite the opposite.  They seem to be an “oasis” in the dark and failing economy.  I think all of us dog owners know why…no matter how hard things get, we still love our pets, we still pamper our pets, and we still try so hard to give back to the dogs that give US so much!

It appears that store owners and people who provide these little toys, gifts and trinkets for the pet industry are changing strategies a bit, given the recent downturn of the economy, by buying less expensive toys to sell, $5 toys instead of $20, but nevertheless, steady rises are being noted just about everywhere.  The crazy thing is, those increases are expected to do nothing BUT rise in the years to come.

Right on Dog Owners!  We need to make signs:  “Proudly Boosting The Failing Economy Since 1981!”

This Winter, Keep Your Dogs Warm With Winter Clothes

Each and every dog breed is born with a coat of fur.  That much we know to be true.  What we don’t often realize is, not all coats are created equal and there are a great deal of dogs out there that just can not handle the cold or rainy conditions that Winter brings all over this country.  While a Husky might be perfectly pleased to sit outside on a freezing cold day, a little Yorkie or Bichon Frise might freeze it’s little paws off.  That said, this Winter you might just have to start investing in some Winter clothes not only for you, but for your furry friends!

Bottom line, regardless of what breed you have, make sure they are warm enough this Winter, and stay dry on the chilly days.  There are plenty of ways to do this, and all are important.  An article I just read mentioned that Winter can be some of the most challenging times for dogs as their bodies struggle to regular their body temperatures by burning more calories than usual.  Here are some things to keep in mind if Winter where you live often gets nasty:

  • If it is rainy where you are, you might want to invest in an easy to put on rain jacket for dogs, they make them in a wide variety of colors and sizes, so finding one to fit should be no problem at all.
  • If the snow can get deep and accumulate, think about buying some booties that strap onto your dogs paws.  Ice chunks can develop between dog paws that become very painful.
  • Sweaters and Dog Jackets can actually do wonders on keeping heat in for a smaller dog.  If you take your dog out on long walks during Winter months, try one.
  • If your dog stays out long periods during colder weather, make sure to increase their daily caloric intake to compensate for the amount they will lose keeping themselves warm.  More food.
  • Remember to keep their exercise up if they stay indoors during the cold spells.  They still need their fitness!

So, start investing in some dog Winter clothes.  Trust me, they will thank you!!

Halloween + Dogs = Match Made in Heaven

Halloween is only ONE day away, and with that, I thought I’d offer up some awesome Halloween survey results that I found while browsing around the world wide web.  I always thought and assumed that of all Holidays, Halloween was one of the biggest when it comes to pet participation, and after seeing some of these results, my assumptions were confirmed!

If you’re anything like me, you might be a little hesitant to actually dress your dog up, opting instead for a Halloween inspired scarf or bandanna, but it appears that we’re in the minority!  Check out the results of a survey done on Dogster.com:

“* 65% of dog owners will be including their pooches in Halloween festivities this year.
* 40% have definite plans to dress up their dogs.
* 72% of those dressing up their dogs will be buying their outfits rather than making them at home.
* 46% percent think the coolest costume last year was Captain Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean.
* 43% say their pets resent wearing costumes.
* 19% of dog owners say their pets love getting gussied up for Halloween-the more outrageous the outfit, the better.”

My favorite little fact is that while 40% of us are going to dress our poochs’ up for Halloween, 43% of us believe that our pets resent actually wearing them!  Hilarious.  Whatever the case may be, you have only one day left to pick out your dog costumes, get them all dressed up, get the dog-safe treat bowls filled and prepare yourself for the festivities!

No More Runaway Dogs With GPS Collars!

What do you get when you put a dog inside a fenced yard, all day, and leave him or her alone to pass their time?  The truth is, you either get a very bored, sleepy dog, or you get a dog that has found a way to either jump the fence, dig under it, open the gate, or otherwise vanish from your yard.  This happens all over America, every single day, and unfortunately the number of dogs that are lost, missing, or runaways is on the rise.  What can we do?

There are actually two things we can do to make sure that your dogs, no matter how far they run, will always be returned to you.  There is Nothing more reassuring than knowing that your pet will never be totally lost.  The first way to prevent this, involves a vet visit, putting the dog under anaesthesia and implanting a micro-chip that is filled with information on the dog, you, your phone number and current address.  This ensures that if your dog runs away, whenever someone finds him or her, the local vet, pet shelter or humane society will be able to scan the dog, find out about you, and get your pooch back to you ASAP.  Not bad.

The second, much easier method of always finding your dog is a relatively new product:  GPS Collars.  Yes, we’re that technologically advanced now, we actually have GPS collars that monitors your dog’s whereabouts at all times.  The coolest feature of many of the GPS Collars is this:  You can set a “Safe” zone around where you will permit your dog to stray, if and when the dog leaves that zone, you’ll automatically receive an alert telling you when, and where the dog ventured out.  Snazzy.

There are a few different types of GPS collars, the more expensive models actually give you a little screen that shows you in real-time, a radar blip of exactly where your dog is; the cheaper, more affordable models will send your alerts either to your cell phone or email address anytime the dog strays.  Either way, both are extremely handy and extremely cool.  They range in size from pretty large collars, to tiny little tags that can be added to your dogs existing collar.  The prices range anywhere from $120 to $250 and most have a monthly service fee tacked onto them.  The bottom line is, it’s worth it.

If you’re afraid of losing Your pet, these two methods, microchipping and GPS collars are simple, genius ways to always know where your pup is at all times.  Peace of mind is a hard thing to put a price on, that is for sure.
