Texas Dogfighting Ring BROKEN!
This post today is a slight departure for all of us here at Doggi Bling. Usually we post dog tips, dog toys, treats, crates, houses, dog food, or just about anything else relating to ways you can make your pet happier, healthier, safer or more comfortable. Today, we’re posting about some news that we found, and the reason is…we couldn’t be happier at the outcome, or more upset about the facts behind it.
A dogfighting ring was just busted and broken in Texas. For this, we are overjoyed. According to the article I just read,
“State officials said late Friday that they had begun dismantling one of the largest dogfighting rings in the country that night, arresting eight people and seizing 187 dogs used by a sophisticated network of bettors throughout eastern Texas. Investigators continued to search for suspects Saturday….In all, 55 people were indicted after an undercover investigation that lasted 17 months. Officials said the network’s matches drew crowds of up to 100 people, who placed tens of thousands of dollars in wagers on a single fight.”
The simple fact that this goes on makes me angrier, sadder, and more frustrated than words can adequately describe. How can anyone, anywhere, partake in such disgusting, despicible and atrocious acts? As our friends on Dogster mentioned, the laws need to be changed to make punishments for such crimes MUCH, MUCH more strict and harsh. It is insane that people convicted of these disgusting acts are only facing a maximum sentence of 2 years. Ridiculous. Dog and animal cruelty is a huge problem in this country and around the world, we all need to do whatever we can to help put an end to it.
Join the ASPCA, get educated, do research…if we all do a little, maybe we can do a lot. For starters, could work Houston investigators to put an end to one ring. Lets stop many more!

President Obama’s “First” Puppy: What Should It Be?!
The elections are over, the results are in, and come January we will have a new President of this great country for the first time in 8 years! I don’t know if you caught it or not, but during the election, President-Elect Barack Obama and his wife Michelle promised their two children, Malia and Sasha, that win or lose, when the election was over they would be rewarded with a puppy. On Election Night, Obama publically announced that when they moved into the White House, a brand new puppy would be coming with them!
Now that we have all the facts, all that’s left is to decide for them, is What kind of puppy?! There will be as many different answers as there will be dog breeds and dog breed enthusiasts, but I really think we need to look a bit closer. As mentioned in an article I just read, there are some things to take into consderation; Malia, the oldest Obama sister, has allergies, and so as such, the girls have mentioned interest in a Golden Doodle. Golden Doodles are a new hybrid breed of dog, not yet recognized by the AKC that combines a Golden Retriever (my personal favorite breed and Great family dog) with a Standard Poodle. This gives you the looks of a curly-headed Golden Retriever, but with hypo-allergenic properties.
President-Elect Obama has also mentioned in the press that he’s interested in Labradoodles, which, similar to Golden Doodles, are a combination of a standard Labrador Retriever and a Standard Poodle, also sharing the same hypo-allergenic properties. The article also mentioned that the American Kennel Club also has a list of dogs that are great for people with allergies. The breeds range from Bedlington Terriers, to Poodles, to Schnauzers to the prim and proper Maltese. Basically, they have a wealth of options if allergies are their concern.
Whatever they choose, a lot of people are hoping, suggesting, and urging the Obama’s to choose a shelter dog to take into the White House with them. Here is where we’re asking for YOUR help: What kind of dog do YOU think should be the new First Puppy of the White House? Sound off, we’ll post the results later!

Halloween + Dogs = Match Made in Heaven
Halloween is only ONE day away, and with that, I thought I’d offer up some awesome Halloween survey results that I found while browsing around the world wide web. I always thought and assumed that of all Holidays, Halloween was one of the biggest when it comes to pet participation, and after seeing some of these results, my assumptions were confirmed!
If you’re anything like me, you might be a little hesitant to actually dress your dog up, opting instead for a Halloween inspired scarf or bandanna, but it appears that we’re in the minority! Check out the results of a survey done on Dogster.com:
“* 65% of dog owners will be including their pooches in Halloween festivities this year.
* 40% have definite plans to dress up their dogs.
* 72% of those dressing up their dogs will be buying their outfits rather than making them at home.
* 46% percent think the coolest costume last year was Captain Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean.
* 43% say their pets resent wearing costumes.
* 19% of dog owners say their pets love getting gussied up for Halloween-the more outrageous the outfit, the better.”“
My favorite little fact is that while 40% of us are going to dress our poochs’ up for Halloween, 43% of us believe that our pets resent actually wearing them! Hilarious. Whatever the case may be, you have only one day left to pick out your dog costumes, get them all dressed up, get the dog-safe treat bowls filled and prepare yourself for the festivities!

May 1st is RSS Awareness Day!
For those dog lovers out there who don’t know about RSS feeds, well, here is how RSSDay.org defines it:
“RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a format used to deliver information from websites and pages that get updated regularly. An RSS document (which is called feed) contains either a summary or the full content from a website.”
This means that if you have a favorite website or blog that always posts content, instead of having to go to the site every time to get your fix, you can have the content shipped your way. Pretty convenient.
For dog lovers, if you have never set up an RSS feed before, I recommend that you start here with my blog to stay up to date on Doggy Bling and the crazy thing we do for our pooches.
Cheers!

Let the dog blogging begin…
I’ll be honest with you up front…I’m a nut. Ya, that’s right, crazy. Estoy completamente loco! Well, that is for dogs, of course. I’ve spent my whole life growing up with dogs, and just can’t get enough of them. From sporting dogs and spaniels, to the big and happy labs and retrievers, to the smaller terrier type that fit into a small barrel handbag, I’ve met them, made friends with them, talked with them, and bonded with them. Why? Well, some people say that alcohol brings out your true character…well, I think that dogs do, and I am at ease and comfortable and playful when around them. Life just doesn’t get any better than when hanging with some fun and carefree pups.
These four legged friends of ours bring so much happiness and laughter to our lives, that it only makes sense we feel the need to pamper them, to coddle them, and to buy them all sorts of items and services they don’t need or necessarily care about. You really do have to ask, is it the pooch who wants that dog sweater, the Burberry collar, or the sterling silver dog tags, or is it the owner? The world may never know…
So why this blog? Simple. I love dogs and I pride myself in being able to generate happiness, laughter, and fun. Since the stories and emotions and humor that accompany our four legged buddies can make even the most stone cold, introverted person smile and laugh, I hope to bring some fun and laughter and smiles into the days of those who follow the blog.
And what is Doggy Bling all about? I’m interested in researching, sharing, engaging, learning, smiling, laughing, and having dialog about the crazy things we do for our pooches. From upscale doggy day care, to high end dog dining, to personal diet trainers, and of course the crazy clothing and accessories, dog collars, dog toys, and dog bedding we get for our pooches, any and all topics are fair game here…
You can expect to hear from me, Dog Aficionado, multiple times per week, as well as some of my four legged blogging friends, Stanley III, Lola, and even Sparky from time to time. They bark, and I type…it is invaluable to get feedback and opinions from those closest to the source.
More bling bling for your pooch pooch. Woof if up.
